10 Best Life Sciences Stocks For 2014

The latest update for our Prime Time portfolio is a provider of high-performance glass for LCD televisions, computer monitors, and other information display applications, notes Charles Mizrahi, editor of Hidden Values Alert.

We like the diversification behind Corning (GLW). The company gets 36% of its revenues from Display technologies, 27% from Telecommunications, 12% from Environmental Technology, 17% from Specialty Materials (tablets/mobiles phones), and 8% from Life Sciences.

This diversification reduces the company's exposure to a specific industry, smoothing out potential bumps in the road to a particular segment.

GLW spent more than $700 million on R&D in the past 12 months (about 9% of revenue). The company continues to find applications for its glass technology.

The company can employ its proprietary technology in growth drivers such as the smartwatch and smart television markets, as well as windshields or marker boards.

GLW has more than $10.6 billion of cash and investments on its balance sheet. The company has very little short-term debt ($23 million).

Sherwin-Williams, along with some other home-improvement stocks, benefits from being part of that rare breed of stocks that do well when times are good, and still do well when times are bad. If the housing market is good, new homes get built en masse, and those homes need to be painted and floored. Hence, with U.S. housing starts up nearly 90% over the past couple of years, homebuilders KB Homes (NYSE: KBH  ) and Beazer Homes (NYSE: BZH  ) have seen revenues finally starting to recover, and companies such as Sherwin-Williams and Lumber Liquidators (NYSE: LL  ) are being pulled along for the ride.

KB Home (KBH) has been acquiring land in San Antonio over the last few years. Last year, it acquired approximately 200 acres of land in this market. It will build a community named CrossCreek in San Antonio comprising of 600 homes. This community will open in two phases, with first phase started in the end of 2013 and the second phase in 2014. Total revenues grew 11% to $450.7 million from $405.2 million in the year-earlier quarter, primarily on higher housing revenues.

Homebuilding stocks have plunged on the news. The Ryland Group (RYL) has fallen 4.6% to $35.15, Toll Brothers (TOL) has dropped 3.1% to $31.45, KB Home (KBH) has declined 3.1% to $16.67 and DR Horton (DHI) is off 2.8% at $18.74. Pulte Group (PHM) has dropped 2.7% at $15.80.

The housing market isn firing on all cylinders. Any investments at the moment should be made with care. Although there are better industries to be investing at the moment — banking and casinos are two names that come to mind — these three homebuilders are worth serious consideration.

Homebuilders to Buy: KB Home (KBH)

KB Home (KBH) delivered its first Q1 profit since 2007 last week on the back of strong price increases across all four of its regions. Chief among the increases was its West Coast region which saw the average sale price increase 30% year-over-year to $525,000. The bad news is that only 346 homes were delivered on the West Coast in Q1 compared to 509 a year earlier.

Small cap tech stocks TechnoConcepts, Inc (OTCMKTS: TCPS), Unisource Corporation (OTCMKTS: USRC) and Strategic Global Investments, Inc (OTCMKTS: STBV) have been getting some attention lately in various investment newsletters thanks to promotions. One stock that has been in the official Magic Formula (MFI) screen for the past month or so has piqued my interest: Kraft (KRFT).

The MFI screens, particularly the $50 million screen, are usually reserved for deep value stocks. Usually you find stocks in here suffering serious adverse business developments (LQDT, NSR, etc.), operate in out-of-favor industries (APOL, STRA, etc.), have volatile and difficult-to-predict future prospects (PDLI comes to mind), or are just simply cheap quantitatively (CSCO, COH, et.al.).

What do Prospect Capital Corporation (NASDAQ:PSEC), Astec Industries, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASTE), and First Financial Corp. (NASDAQ:THFF) have in common? Not much, on the surface. In fact, were it not for something very specific to one particular person (me), they'd have nothing in common at all. This week though, THFF, ASTE, and PSEC all have at least one thing in common, and that's the fact that they're all going into my mental/hypothetical portfolio.

  • [By Doug Hughes]

Doug Hughes: Sure, there is another one. The next one, the symbol would be (THFF). They're in Indiana, a very large bank. First Federal Financial Corporation. Again, their book value is $27.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Athersys (ATHX) is a biopharmaceutical company focused in the field of regenerative medicine. This stock closed up 4% to $1.79 in Thursday's trading session.

    Thursday's Range: $1.68-$1.80

    52-Week Range: $0.95-$2.42

    Thursday's Volume: 270,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 323,188

From a technical perspective, ATHX bounced notably higher here right off its 50-day moving average of $1.67 with decent upside volume. This stock recently pulled back from $1.99 to its 50-day at $1.67. Shares of ATHX may now be down with that pullback, since the stock is starting to trend higher and move within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if ATHX manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $1.90 to $1.99 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ATHX as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $1.67 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 323,188 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ATHX will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2.16 to $2.25. Any high-volume move above those levels will put its 52-week high at $2.42 into range for shares of ATHX.
