Top 10 Oil Service Stocks To Watch Right Now

Offshore drillers like Transocean (RIG), Seadrill (SDRL) and Noble (NE) have gotten pounded this year. Is it time to buy? Well, if not that, at least its time to become less bearish, say the folks at BMO Capital Markets, who upgraded the shares of Transocean, Seadrill, Diamond Offshore (DO), Ensco (ESV), Noble, Rowan (RDC) and Atwood Oceanics (ATW).

BMO Capital Markets’ Alan Laws and Peyton Mason explain why they see better times ahead of offshore-drilling stocks:

We are upgrading the offshore drillers to Market Perform from Underperform given what we view as a better risk/reward balance over next 6 to 12 months. We believe the stocks largely discount the weakness seen/expected in the industry in 2014/2015 with consensus estimates now reflecting the anticipated level of day rate reductions. Recent fixtures, while likely negotiated in 2013, suggest activity is resuming (albeit slowly), and we expect this to increase as ��learing house��rates are reached for producer cost containment. In other words, the potential for a surprise demand uptick now outweighs already price- in risks of further weakening, in our view. In our view, the largest risk to our upgrade today is being a bit early given what could be a longer drawn-out return to activity. That said we want to be positioned for the technical inflection like the land rigs in fall 2012. Stock downside appears limited with an already negative bias in expectations and ultimately investor fatigue with the thesis. Fundamental valuation metrics (PE and P/BV) also suggest trough levels. We think differentiation (vs. being viewed as one group) is likely to become more pronounced in a bounce, and we prefer ATW and ESV over peers. While other subsectors in Oil Services remain more attractive today, we believe value and contrarian investors should start kicking tires.

    The Omaha, NE-based logistics and transportation company announced Q3 revenue of $511.73 million, which was up slightly from last year’s $506.50 million revenue figure. WERN reported net income for the quarter of $21.53 million, or 29 cents per diluted share, which was down from last year’s Q3 earnings of $25.13 million, or 34 cents per diluted share.

    The company was able to meet analyst views of 29 cents EPS, and slightly surpass the revenue estimate of $503.82 million.

    WERN shares were up 21 cents, or 0.90%, at Thursday’s market close, but were edging lower in after-hours trading. YTD, the company’s stock is up just over 4%.

    One potential earnings short-squeeze candidate is Conn's (CONN), a specialty retailer of durable products, which is set to release numbers on Thursday before the market open. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Conn's to report revenue of $259.74 million on earnings of 60 cents per share.

    Just recently, Piper Jaffray said that Conn's is taking steps to increase its market share, faces little competition, and should report strong second quarter earnings. The firm said Conn's is raising its market share by extending credit at relativity low rates to customers with low credit ratings.     The current short interest as a percentage of the float for Conn's is very high at 16.8%. That means that out of the 24.16 million shares in the tradable float, 4.23 million shares are sold short by the bears. This stock is a low float and high short interest situation. Any bullish earnings news could easily spark a monster short-squeeze for shares of CONN post-earnings.

    From a technical perspective, CONN is currently trending above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last six months, with shares soaring higher from its low of $31.02 to its recent high of $68.73 a share. During that uptrend, shares of CONN have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action.

    If you're bullish on CONN, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out to a new 52-week high above $69.30 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 459,330 shares. The Case for IBM

There were a couple items IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) fans could point to as positives following its recent earnings release. For one, IBM handily beat analyst non-GAAP earnings estimates last quarter -- $3.91 a share for Q2 compared to the $3.78-a-share average analysts were expecting. IBM subsequently raised its non-GAAP annual earnings expectations to about $16.90 a share in lieu of the $16.70 forecast earlier this year.

Unfortunately, there were also negatives for IBM bears to sink their teeth into. IBM CEO Ginni Rometty gets it: The future of the IT industry is about utilizing massive amounts of data to make business decisions. The question is, how long should IBM investors wait for its shift to take hold?

The upshot
Even though analysts' earnings expectations were soundly beaten, IBM's division revenue results saw year-over-year declines in most every area in Q2. But after accounting for a $1 billion charge related to thousands of job cuts in Q2 -- over 3,300 employees were let go last quarter alone -- non-GAAP results tell a slightly better story.

The aforementioned non-GAAP EPS of $3.91 was an 8% improvement over last year, and IBM's margin improvement -- up 1.4 percentage points to 49.7% in Q2 -- should get even better as workforce cuts and operating efficiencies start to take hold. Rometty is certainly expecting IBM's relatively positive non-GAAP earnings and margin results to continue, as indicated by IBM's raising annual earnings expectations to "at least $16.90."

Still work to do
The lone revenue bright spot by division for IBM in Q2 was its software unit, which enjoyed a 4% jump in revenue to $6.4 billion. It appears that IBM's efforts to transition from hardware to the services side of the IT industry is working. And IBM competitors are learning that shift in mindset isn't just a good idea -- it's a necessity.

Another longtime IBM competitor, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) , can certainly appreciate the position of IBM. While the 12% decline in IBM's hardware division sales in Q2 hurt, every bit of news detailing the decline of the PC market leaves Microsoft shareholders scrambling. But in the latest earnings release, CFO Amy Hood said, "While our fourth quarter results were affected by the decline in the PC market, we continue to see strong demand for our enterprise and cloud offerings, resulting in a record unearned revenue balance this quarter."

What do Microsoft's challenges in the declining PC market have to do with IBM? Just as Microsoft is showing signs of life in the brave new world of cloud computing and data management, IBM's cloud-related revenues the first half of 2013 jumped more than 70%. IBM is beginning to show its strengths during this business transition, and it's time mid- to long-term investors start taking notice, if they haven't already.

The dynamic nature of the IT industry requires adaptation, and some are more adept than others. IBM certainly wasn't the first to recognize the need to change, but that's water under the bridge now. Rometty has her IBMers moving in the right direction.

Golar LNG Partners LP (the Partnership), incorporated on September 24, 2007, is a limited partnership formed as a wholly owned subsidiary of Golar LNG Limited (Golar), an independent owner and operator of floating storage re-gasification units (FSRUs) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, to own and operate FSRUs and LNG carriers under long-term charters. In November 2012, the Company acquired from Golar interests in subsidiaries that lease and operate the LNG carrier, the Golar Grand.

FSRU Charters

The Company provides the services of each of the Golar Spirit and the Golar Winter to Petrobras under separate time charter parties (or TCP) and operation and services agreements (OSAs). The TCPs and OSAs are interdependent and when combined have the same effect as the time charters for its LNG carriers. The services of the Golar Freeze are provided to DUSUP under a TCP. The Golar Spirit and ! Golar Winter charters also contained provisions giving Petrobras the option to purchase the vessels from it under certain circumstances.

LNG Carrier Charters

The Company provides the LNG marine transportation services of the Golar Mazo, Methane Princess and the Golar Maria under a time charters with LNG Shipping SpA. A time charter is a contract for the use of the vessel for a fixed period of time at a specified daily rate. Under a time charter, the vessel owner provides crewing and other services related to the vessel�� operation.

The Company competes with Royal Dutch Shell, BP, BG, Malaysian International Shipping Company, National Gas Shipping Company, Qatar Gas Transport Company, Excelerate Energy, Hoegh LNG, Exmar, Teekay LNG and MISC Berhad.

Noble Corporation is an offshore drilling contractor for the oil and gas industry. The Company performs contract drilling services with its fleet of 79 mobile offshore drilling units and one floating production storage and offloading unit (FPSO) located globally. Drillships

The Company�� drillships are self-propelled vessels. These units maintain their position over the well through the use of either a fixed mooring system or a computer controlled dynamic positioning system. Its drillships are capable of drilling in water depths from 1,000 to 12,000 feet. The maximum drilling depth of its drillships ranges from 20,000 feet to 40,000 feet. As of December 31, 2011, the drillship fleet consisted of 14 units, including four drillships under construction with Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. Jackups

As of December 31, 2011, the Company had 49 jackups in its fleet, including six jackups under construction. The rig hull includes the drilling rig, jacking system, crew quarters, loading and unloading facilities, storage areas for bulk and liquid materials, helicopter landing deck and other related equipment. All of its jackups are independent leg and cantilevered. Its jackups are capable of drilling to a maximum depth of 30,000 feet in water depths up to 400 feet.

Submersibles

The Company has two su! bmersible! s in the fleet, which are cold-stacked. Submersibles are mobile drilling platforms, which are towed to the drill site and submerged to drilling position by flooding the lower hull until it rests on the sea floor, with the upper deck above the water surface. Its submersibles are capable of drilling to a depth of 25,000 feet in water depths up to 70 feet.
